I Will Endure

We all have our heartaches, our burdens to bear.

The older I grow the more I care.

Empathy has a bittersweet twinge.

I know part of your pain because I’ve been singed.

Life is like the refiner’s fire.

We’re bent into shape when days seem dire.

I understand that life is a test,

And I try to smile and do my best.

I know positive thinking is key,

And lifting others is important to me.

So out in the crowd, I give what I’ve got.

Then I come home and pay the price for my lot.

I’m often sick when people don’t see.

An invisible illness takes hold of me.

And late at night, alone in my bed,

The tears leak out on a blanket of dread.

Exhaustion combines with all the pain,

And I wait for the cycle to begin again.

I truly am happy much of the time.

I work hard to let others know that I’m fine.

But I wonder if anyone sees through the wall,

For my strength is waning and I’m giving my all.

I won’t give up. My commitment is sure

Though the burden is heavy, I will endure.
