Dear Readers,
Today I have been meditating a lot about temple work and what it really means in my life. My family and I watched a great LDS movie called, “Mormon Temple: Mountain of the Lord.” (Click the link to watch it yourself). It is a great movie, and it shows the sacrifices that the early members of the church made to make the blessings of the temple available to each of us.
I was able to go through the temple myself almost 3 years ago in November of 2010. It was a very special day. I have grown up in the church, and I always knew I would go to the temple. But when I finally went for myself it was a life changing experience. I don’t know exactly what I expected it to be like. I have struggled with different things in my life, and I guess that I thought if I made it to the temple that somehow those problems would fade away. I’ll tell you right now, that didn’t happen. I left the temple that day with all of the same struggles that I had before going inside.
However, I was able to make covenants with a loving Heavenly Father, and I was promised that if I am faithful to those covenants that everything in my life will work to my good. I didn’t get any big earth shattering answers, but I was given peace of mind and hope that If I am obedient, then I don’t need to worry about what the future holds. All I need to do is my best and put my trust in my Father in Heaven. Going to the temple has helped me learn how to do that more in my life, and that has helped tremendously.
One point that was made in the movie was about doing temple work for the dead. A reporter asks Pres. Wilford Woodruff if the Saints believe in doing vicarious work for the dead. The Prophet confirmed that we do. He goes on to explain that anyone who claims that Jesus Christ is their Savior relies on this principle. For the atonement is the greatest vicarious act of compassion and mercy in history. And it is in the temples that we can continue to do the great work of providing our ancestors with the opportunity to make the same sacred covenants that lead us all back to live again with our Heavenly Father.
Temple work continues to be a great blessing in my life. I am so thankful to those early Saints for sacrificing so much for all of us. I am grateful for a Father in Heaven who loves me, and for the spirit that I feel when I visit his holy house.
