Hey You! Welcome back to The Vibrant Life Podcast. I’m Emily Romrell and it’s another beautiful day. I hope you take at least a few minutes while the sun is shining to do something that makes you smile.

I’m excited about the topic today because it’s something that makes me smile on a regular basis. This is a subject that is very dear to my heart. We’re going to look at the magic in music.

Almost every heart on the planet has been touched in some way by music. Whether we’re babies falling asleep to the sound of lullabies, or young children learning the ABCs, or teenagers diving into the music of our generation, music is foundational to who we all are. Sometimes when I hear a song, and I bet it’s the same for you, my mind is swept back in time to places of meaningful memories and I often see faces of the people that I love in those memories.

One of my favorite songs is In My Life by The Beatles. I mean, The Beatles are the greatest band of all time, right? I’ve had some passionate discussions with people about that. But seriously, the lyrics of this song are magical. Just listen to the first two verses:

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all.

That’s what I’m talking about. Music surrounds us as we live our lives. It is so often the background to both the significant things that happen as well as the day-to-day things.

My family is pretty musical. We all took piano lessons as kids and most of us play some sort of instrument. We love singing. And… if the right combination of words are said it’s like a magic spell and a relevant song is very likely to pop out. It’s one of the great things that I love about being in my family.

So it often saddens me to hear people say that they aren’t musical. Granted some people are blessed with natural talents. And some people are pretty tone-deaf. But honestly, who cares. There is a quote by Plato that I love so much that I have it on the inside of my guitar strap:

Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet. ~ Plato

I think if you love to sing, SING. If you want to write, WRITE. The same goes for anything else you have a desire for. I think so often we let ourselves down in not doing the things we love because we’re afraid of how others might respond or what they might think. But that’s a lose-lose scenario because you lose out on the joy you would have in doing what you love, and others would lose the experience of you sharing that joy with them.

My mom loves the Carpenters and they have a great old song that’s titled, funnily enough, Sing.

Sing, sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things not bad
Sing of happy not sad

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple to last
Your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not
Good enough for anyone
Else to hear
Just sing, sing a song

There’s a fascinating thing about doing what you love though. The more you practice something, the better you become at it. And often it’s the people who practice what they love that ultimately outshine those with natural gifts who don’t work as hard.

Music has a healing quality that truly is magical. Not only does it soothe the soul during difficult times. But there is a lot of science behind how it affects the body and helps to heal it. You know this podcast is called The Vibrant Life and like literally everything in life, music is composed of vibrations. And it’s those vibrations that influence us. The right music has been proven to reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen consumption. Florence Nightingale even used music to heal soldiers during the Crimean War. Music helps us align our bodies and minds to certain vibrations that allow us to live our best lives.

Also, there is something to be said for making your own music. I’m definitely not the best singer out there but I love to play the guitar and I like to write an original song now and then. It’s one of the most fulfilling things to take thoughts from your mind and heart and put them down to music. There is an extra layer of magic that the notes provide beyond just the words alone. You can check out some of my songs on my website emilyromrell.com

Anyway, I know this episode is short and sweet, Peeps. But I would strongly encourage you to fill your life with as much music as possible. You won’t regret it. Take care and Live The Vibrant Life!
